One…Two…Three Plastic Surgery!

Miami Plastic Surgery | SelfiesSocial media presents us with the gift of connecting us to friends and family through one medium. However, according to a recent survey, it has also made us more self-conscious about our looks and how we present ourselves to the world.

One in three facial plastic surgeons, polled by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), reported that patients who walk into their office are more aware of their appearance because of social media, specifically photo sharing. This in turn has heightened the request for procedures.

Several procedures that are sought out, due to this medium, are nose jobs (10 percent increase), hair transplants (7 percent increase) and eyelid surgery (6 percent increase). Not only has the desire for facial procedures increased, but also the amount of people under the age of 30 who want to undergo them.

Fifty-eight percent of facial plastic surgeons have noticed an increase in cosmetic surgery or injectables for patients under the age of 30. Younger adults and teens are the main users of social media, so it is no surprise that plastic surgery is on their minds. The AAFPRS President Dr. Edward Farrior, MD, states that the images that this population posts online are often their first impression to the world. These are the pictures that will be seen by prospective friends, romantic interests and employers. They want to make sure they put their best face forward.

But First, Let’s Look at the Selfie

Selfies have grown as a resource in plastic surgery in more ways than one. A selfie is a picture that you take of yourself on a mobile device. Many patients show their surgeon a selfie of themselves to explain what specific goals they would like to achieve through the procedure they are interested in.

Patients also use selfies to document the healing process after their surgery. The selfies are typically sent to the surgeon’s office to assure them that everything is healing well or notify them if they need a follow-up appointment.
