What to Consider When Choosing a Plastic Surgeon

Whether minor or extensive, plastic surgery can be a very exciting time spent in anticipation of an improved look and increased self-confidence. Before rushing in, it’s very important to do your research and ask the right questions. Initially, searching for a plastic surgeon can be daunting. However, by following a few basic guidelines you can begin to narrow down your choice to find one that’s right for you and that you can trust.

Ask if the Doctor is Board-Certified In Plastic Surgery

One of the most important pieces of information to find out is whether or not a doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Many physicians are trained as general surgeons, but may not be highly qualified to practice plastic surgery. By checking medical records, you can avoid unqualified doctors posing as plastic surgeons. To receive certification, plastic surgeons must complete three years of general surgery, two to three years of a plastic surgery residency, two years of professional experience and a comprehensive written and oral exam.

Does the Doctor Have Experience Performing Specific Procedures?

In addition to being board-certified, you want to choose a plastic surgeon that has extensive experience performing the exact same procedure that you want performed on you. You wouldn’t want someone doing plastic surgery on your nose if they’ve only had experience doing breast augmentations. To determine their level of experience, be sure to ask enough questions about the specific procedure. You want to know how long they have been performing the procedure, the number of surgeries they’ve performed, and how they trained to become qualified to perform the procedure.

Ask to See Before-and-After Plastic Surgery Photos

It’s always a good idea to look at before-and-after photos of past patients so that you can actually see the surgeon’s work. Be sure to compare photos of those who had the same procedure done as the one you want. Take a close look at patients who are similar to you and decide if you think you’d be happy with the results if the procedure had been performed on you. Steer clear of any plastic surgeon who cannot provide photos of their handiwork.

Good Rapport and Thorough Consultation

No matter how qualified and experienced a plastic surgeon may be, it’s imperative that you feel comfortable in their presence. Consider the amount of time they spend with you during a consultation. They should be very willing to explain all aspects of the procedure and answer any questions you may have. If you feel rushed or your questions aren’t being answered to your liking, then chances are that’s not the doctor for you. Go with your gut and choose a plastic surgeon that has a good rapport with his patients and staff.

Plastic surgery is something that you have to live with for the rest of your life, so choosing the right plastic surgeon can save you from a lot of heartache, pain, and money. Board certification, experience, good rapport and a thorough consultation are just a few things to consider. Selecting wisely can be the difference between getting the results you love and ending up botched.
